Student Pilot's Licence (SPL)
What you will need to do to start your flying training.

Now that you've decided that flying is for you, you need to do some stuff.  And yes, it will cost you some money.  You can start your training before you do this, but you won't be able to go solo.

First - you need an Aviation Reference Number (ARN).  This will be your 'licence' number for life, and you can arrange to get this through your training organisation.  The ARN will be issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).

Second - you need to be fit.   You don't need to be Superman, but you do need to meet some minimum eyesight and general health standards.  So you'll need to make an appointment with a Designated Aviation Medical Examiner (DAME), for an Aviation Medical.  As a student pilot, you will need to get a Class 2 medical certificate.  This will probably cost you about  $120 - $150.
(Let me make something very clear - any prices I list on this website are APPROXIMATE - I don't want to hear anyone saying "But Steve said...")

The DAME will require your ARN (see above), which is why you need to get that first. You will then need to pay CASA a processing fee for the medical as well (approx $75.00 at the moment).

Third - you will probably need an Aviation Security Identification Clearance (ASIC).  The ASIC is an ID card that must be worn at all times when you are in the operational areas of most airports (the tarmac, hangars etc) - in particular, those airports that handle commercial traffic (Qantas, VirginBlue etc.).  Guess what?  This will cost you another $196 (at the moment).  And you haven't started flying yet!

Once you've done all of the above, you're set to go.  You have probably started your lessons by now, and you have some study to do - (there are several theory exams that you need to pass - don't think it's all up in the air!) - but with all of the above you are able to fly your first solo circuits (when your instructor thinks you're ready to).  Keep it up and you'll be ready to take your GFPT.
